The AMS Policy Program (APP) seeks a full-time Senior Policy Fellow.
The Sr. Policy Fellow will participate in all aspects of the Policy Program, and will have special responsibility for developing, organizing, implementing, and leading policy studies and forums. These policy forums bring together policy makers and providers and users of Earth system science/services to foster public health and safety, economic growth, protection of the environment and ecosystems, and national security and global stability.
The Sr. Policy Fellow will also arrange and/or conduct briefings and seminars for Congress and key Federal agencies; prepare proposals to potential government, corporate and foundation sponsors of such studies and forums; and perform other duties as assigned by the APP Director.
Ph.D.-level education and/or equivalent knowledge or experience in Earth system sciences and public policy is strongly preferred. Some combination of the following is highly desirable: familiarity with the legislative process; experience working with government agencies; knowledge of the international dimensions of Earth system science/services; knowledge of environmental impacts on society, public policy, or economics. Exceptional oral and written communication skills are required with respect to both technical and
general audiences.
The AMS, with a membership of more than 11,000 government, academic and private sector atmospheric and related science professionals, is committed to the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and their application.
In 1999, the AMS established a Policy Program to assist in meeting that commitment. The APP is a team of highly dedicated professionals who will look to the Senior Policy Fellow for a combination of leadership, professional ability, and team play.
This position is in the AMS Washington, DC office. The selection process will begin September 2005 and the position will remain open until filled.
