AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy

Posted to Author: Pielke Jr., R. | Science Policy: General

Registration is now open for the 2006 AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy in Washington, DC. The meeting will be held on April 20-21, 2006 (Thursday and Friday) at the Washington Court Hotel.

The AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy (formerly the "AAAS Colloquium"), held in Washington each spring, provides a forum for discussion and debate about budget and other policy issues facing the S&T community. Click here for the latest version of the 2006 Forum program. Click here for registration information. The 2006 Forum features sessions on the budgetary and policy context for research and development in 2007; achieving energy security; avian flu and other global health threats; science and technology and homeland security; the global innovation challenge, and responses by U.S. industry and policymakers; and protecting the integrity of science.

I've never been to the Forum (which used to be called the Colloquium). Being in DC, most of the topics they focus on are often already talked about in town, and the big speeches are usually available online after a few months. In short, I don't see it being worth the expense. Especially when the meal speakers are additional expenses.

What is the value of this event? Is it more for those out of town, and those otherwise not regularly connected to the issues the Forum chooses to address? For example, I think Roger's posts on the RAGS report are going to be more substantive than any of the dialogue in the Forum's session on the Innovation Challenge. While AAAS's policy staff are willing to engage the trickier aspects of these issues, that doesn't seem to extend to the membership at large - which appears to be the driving force behind this meeting, much like the AAAS Annual Meeting.

Please let me know what, if anything, I'm missing. And yes, I'm not a member.

David- Thanks, I'd actually welcome a report back from anyone attending the AAAS event. We'd be happy to publish one or more perspectives on what goes on.
